Vacuum Truck Inspection & Certification in Saudi Arabia

Vacuum trucks remove sludge, slops, sewage and industrial liquid waste at refineries, plants, camps and municipal sites across Saudi Arabia. The tank works under vacuum and sometimes pressure, and the vacuum pump exhaust can carry flammable vapour in petroleum service. Independent inspection of the vessel, relief valves and pump system reduces the risk of tank failure, fire and toxic exposure.

What we inspect on a vacuum truck

  • ✓Tank shell, heads and weld seams for corrosion, wall loss, dents and cracks, with thickness readings where needed
  • ✓Vacuum relief and pressure relief valves for correct set points, freedom of movement and condition
  • ✓Vacuum pump (liquid ring, rotary vane or lobe-type blower), oil system, drive and PTO for leaks and abnormal vibration
  • ✓High-level shut-off or overfill protection, ball valve and shut-off devices for function
  • ✓Rear door or hatch seals, locking arms and hinges for sealing under vacuum
  • ✓Suction and discharge hoses, couplings and camlocks for wear, crushing and rated condition
  • ✓Exhaust of the vacuum pump, silencer and flame arrestor where flammable service applies
  • ✓Static earthing and bonding, sight gauge, brakes and tyres

Common defects we find

  • ✓Stuck or incorrectly set vacuum and pressure relief valves
  • ✓Corrosion or cracked welds on the tank shell and rear door
  • ✓Worn or hardened rear door seals leading to vacuum loss
  • ✓Overfill protection that is disabled or fails to close
  • ✓Collapsed or perished suction hoses and worn camlock couplings

Risks of operating uncertified

  • ✓Tank implosion or over-pressurisation if relief devices are stuck or incorrectly set
  • ✓Fire or explosion from flammable vapour at the pump exhaust or an ignition source on the truck
  • ✓Operator exposure to hazardous liquid or gas during connection, discharge and rear door opening

Testing, standards & frequency

Load / performance test

Not applicable: a lifting load test does not apply. A vacuum pump performance check, relief valve set point verification and a leak or pressure test of the tank are typically used instead, to the values set by the manufacturer or code.

Inspection interval

Typically at least annually, with relief valve and pressure retaining checks on a schedule set by the manufacturer, client or applicable code, and re-inspection before mobilisation.

Standards referenced

  • API RP 2219 (safe operation of vacuum trucks in petroleum service)
  • ASME BPVC Section VIII, where the tank was built to code
  • Manufacturer specifications and operating manuals
  • Saudi Aramco General Instructions (GI), where applicable

FAQs

Is the tank on a vacuum truck treated as a pressure vessel?+

It depends on how it was designed and what the client requires. Tanks built to a pressure vessel code are normally inspected to that code, while other tanks are assessed against the manufacturer's data and client rules.

What makes a vacuum truck in petroleum service higher risk?+

The pump exhaust and tank vapour space can contain flammable gas, so ignition control, bonding and exhaust arrangements become critical. Client procedures for vacuum trucks in hydrocarbon service are usually stricter.
