Prime Mover (Tractor Head) Inspection & Certification in Saudi Arabia
Prime movers, or tractor heads, pull semi-trailers carrying containers, lowbeds, tankers and flatbeds on Saudi highways and industrial roads. Their fifth wheel, air brake system and drivetrain carry the combined weight of the whole combination. A third-party inspection gives hauliers and project owners evidence that the tractor is mechanically and legally fit for the work it has been assigned.
What we inspect on a prime mover (tractor head)
- ✓Fifth wheel plate, jaws, locking mechanism, release handle and slide mechanism for wear, cracks and secure operation
- ✓Fifth wheel mounting plate, bolts and brackets on the chassis for looseness and fatigue
- ✓Air brake system: compressor, governor, air dryer, brake chambers, relay valves and ABS, with air leakage and low-pressure warning checks
- ✓Air line couplings and the trailer electrical connector for damage and secure fit
- ✓Chassis rails and cross members for cracks, repairs and corrosion
- ✓Steering linkage, steering knuckle king pins and suspension for play and wear
- ✓Engine, transmission and axles for leaks, abnormal noise and cooling system condition
- ✓Tyres and wheels, cab mounts, mirrors, speed limiter, lighting and in-vehicle monitoring where required by the client
Common defects we find
- ✓Worn fifth wheel jaws or a sticking locking mechanism
- ✓Air leaks at couplings, chambers and air lines
- ✓Excess play in steering linkage and steering knuckle king pins
- ✓Cracked or repaired chassis rails near the fifth wheel mount
- ✓Defective ABS warning or inoperative speed limiter
Risks of operating uncertified
- ✓Trailer uncoupling from a worn or incorrectly locked fifth wheel
- ✓Brake fade or loss of air pressure during long descents with a full combination
- ✓Jackknifing caused by defective trailer brake connections or poor ABS function
Testing, standards & frequency
Load / performance test
Not applicable: a lifting load test does not apply to a prime mover. A brake performance test, a coupling lock verification with a trailer or test pin, and a drive-away check on an unladen or ballasted combination are typically used instead.
Inspection interval
Typically at least annually and before mobilisation, with fifth wheel and brake checks more often for tractors in daily heavy-haul service where client or fleet rules require.
Standards referenced
- ISO 337 (50 mm semi-trailer fifth wheel coupling pin, the interface to the tractor's fifth wheel)
- OSHA 29 CFR 1926.601 (motor vehicles on construction sites)
- UNECE Regulation No. 13 (braking of category M, N and O vehicles), as a reference for brake performance
- Manufacturer specifications and operating manuals

FAQs
What is the most critical item on a prime mover inspection?+
The fifth wheel and the air brake system carry the highest consequence. A worn coupling or an air leak can lead to an uncoupling or loss of braking, so both are checked closely.
Is a prime mover inspected together with its trailer?+
Often both are inspected in the same visit, but each unit is assessed and recorded separately. This keeps the records clear if the tractor is later paired with a different trailer.
