Telescopic Crawler Crane Inspection & Certification in Saudi Arabia
Telescopic crawler cranes combine a hydraulic telescopic boom with a tracked undercarriage, giving quick set-up, low ground pressure and the ability to travel on soft or uneven ground at plants, solar farms and infrastructure sites. They are usually used for mid-range capacity lifts where a lattice crawler crane would be slow to assemble. Third-party inspection is needed because the boom, undercarriage and travel-with-load functions each carry their own limits that the operator cannot visually confirm.
What we inspect on a telescopic crawler crane
- ✓Telescopic boom sections, wear pads and extension cylinders or ropes for wear, leaks and uneven extension
- ✓Track extension and retraction mechanism, track frames and the locking pins that fix track width
- ✓Track shoes, rollers, idlers and sprockets, plus travel motor and gearbox leakage
- ✓LMI and anti-two-block operation, including any capacity charts for lifting while travelling
- ✓Slew ring bolting, slew drive condition and swing brake operation
- ✓Hoist winch rope, drum, brake and hook block with safety latch
- ✓Control system for travel-with-load speed limiting and any ground-contact or tilt sensors
- ✓Hydraulic hoses, valve blocks and counterweight attachment points
Common defects we find
- ✓Boom wear pads worn through, giving sideways boom play and uneven loading
- ✓Track width locking pins damaged or missing so tracks are not fully secured
- ✓Hydraulic extension cylinder drift or leakage causing boom retraction under load
- ✓Track roller seal leaks and worn sprocket teeth speeding up track wear
- ✓LMI not configured for the actual track width or counterweight fitted
Risks of operating uncertified
- ✓Boom retraction or collapse under load from cylinder drift or failed holding valves
- ✓Overturn when track width is not fully extended and locked as the load chart assumes
- ✓Overload or loss of stability when travelling with a load outside the manufacturer's limits
Testing, standards & frequency
Load / performance test
A rated-capacity load test is typically carried out at 100%-125% of rated capacity at selected radii and boom lengths, depending on the standard and client, with any travel-with-load function checked only within the manufacturer's stated limits.
Inspection interval
Typically at least annually, with pre-mobilisation checks and re-inspection after major repair or after heavy use on abrasive or soft ground.

FAQs
How does inspecting a telescopic crawler crane differ from a conventional lattice crawler crane?+
A telescopic crawler has a hydraulic boom, so inspectors concentrate on boom sections, wear pads and extension cylinders rather than lattice members and pendants. The undercarriage, slew ring and LMI checks are broadly similar.
Can a telescopic crawler crane travel while carrying a load?+
Some models have a specific travel-with-load capacity chart with limits on speed, boom position and ground condition. If you plan to do this, the inspection and test should cover that configuration.
