Mast Climbing Work Platform Inspection & Certification in Saudi Arabia

A mast climbing work platform climbs on one or two vertical masts anchored to the structure, carrying people, tools and materials along a facade or around a tank or chimney at working height. In Saudi Arabia it is used on high-rise cladding, rendering, masonry and facade work where a larger, steadier deck than a swing stage is needed. Its safety depends on mast ties, the rack-and-pinion drive and the safety brake, so third-party inspection tests these systems on every installation, not just on delivery.

What we inspect on a mast climbing work platform

  • ✓Base frame or chassis, levelling jacks and ground bearing, with sole boards where needed
  • ✓Mast sections: joint bolts, alignment, verticality, rack condition and damage
  • ✓Mast tie spacing, anchor condition and maximum free-standing height against the manufacturer's tie schedule, including anchor pull-out evidence where required
  • ✓Rack-and-pinion drive units, brakes, gearbox oil, and wear on pinions and guide rollers
  • ✓Overspeed safety device (safety brake) functionally tested as the manufacturer specifies, plus upper and lower limit switches
  • ✓Platform deck, extensions, guardrails, toe boards and gates, against the load and extension limits
  • ✓Ground enclosure gate and interlocks, landing gates and the emergency descent device
  • ✓Electrical supply, trailing cable, isolator, earthing and emergency stop

Common defects we find

  • ✓Mast ties missing, spaced beyond the manufacturer's schedule, or fixed to unsuitable substrates
  • ✓Worn pinions or rack teeth, and loose mast joint bolts
  • ✓A safety brake that does not arrest within the allowable distance, or that is overdue for servicing
  • ✓Platform extensions overloaded, or guardrails modified beyond the approved configurations
  • ✓Ground enclosure gates or interlocks bypassed, allowing access beneath a moving platform

Risks of operating uncertified

  • ✓Mast collapse or platform fall when ties are inadequate or the free-standing height is exceeded
  • ✓Uncontrolled descent if the drive brake and overspeed safety device do not work
  • ✓Struck-by hazards beneath the platform from an unsecured ground enclosure or dropped materials

Testing, standards & frequency

Load / performance test

Typically a rated-load test at 100%-125% of rated capacity depending on the standard and client, with the platform driven through its travel and the overspeed safety device tested as the manufacturer specifies. The test is normally repeated after re-erection at a new location or after height extension.

Inspection interval

Typically an inspection after each erection and any height or configuration change, at least annually thereafter, with a daily pre-use check and safety-brake testing at intervals set by the manufacturer or client.

Standards referenced

  • ANSI/SAIA A92.9 (mast climbing work platforms)
  • EN 1495 (lifting platforms - mast climbing work platforms)
  • Manufacturer specifications and load charts
  • Saudi Aramco General Instructions (GI), where applicable

FAQs

How is a mast climbing work platform different from a swing stage for inspection?+

A mast climber is a rigid platform tied to the structure and driven on a rack and pinion, not hung from wire ropes. The inspection therefore focuses on mast ties, anchors, the drive and the safety brake rather than on ropes and counterweights.

How often is the safety brake on a mast climber tested?+

The manufacturer sets the interval, and many require a test at installation and again at regular intervals, which a third-party inspector can witness and record. Follow the manual and any additional client or standard requirement.
