Telescopic Boom Lift Inspection & Certification in Saudi Arabia

A telescopic boom lift extends a straight boom in a single line, giving the greatest horizontal reach and height of the common self-propelled platforms. In Saudi Arabia it is used for steel erection, facade and cladding work, tank and flare-stack access, and pipe-rack work at refineries and industrial cities. Because the load moves outward as the boom extends, the length and angle sensors, load chart limits and the structural condition of the boom sections decide whether it is safe to operate.

What we inspect on a telescopic boom lift

  • ✓Telescopic boom sections: wear pads, side play, and extend/retract chains or cables and their tension and adjustment
  • ✓Boom length and angle sensors and the envelope-limiting system, checked against the manufacturer's working envelope and rated-capacity chart
  • ✓Boom lift and telescope cylinders, holding valves and hoses for leaks, drift and chafing along the boom
  • ✓Slew ring and turntable bolts, plus any jib, platform rotator and platform levelling system
  • ✓Platform load cell, overload alarm, tilt cut-out and the wind-speed limit shown on the platform
  • ✓Axle extension or outriggers, four-wheel drive, steering, parking brake and wheel nuts
  • ✓Ground and platform controls, emergency stop, auxiliary power and emergency lowering
  • ✓Structural welds and boom-tip deflection, plus capacity plates, decals and guardrail integrity

Common defects we find

  • ✓Worn or sticking boom wear pads, or slack and stretched extension chains and cables causing uneven telescoping
  • ✓Length or angle sensors out of calibration, so the envelope limiter does not stop travel at the rated outreach
  • ✓Hydraulic leakage at the telescope cylinder or boom-mounted hoses, and boom drift under load
  • ✓Cracks or distortion in boom sections from overloading or side impact
  • ✓Platform load-sensing faults, or missing wind-rating and capacity decals

Risks of operating uncertified

  • ✓Boom structural failure or machine overturn when overloaded at long outreach
  • ✓Sudden uncontrolled boom movement from a hydraulic or chain failure while workers are at height
  • ✓Platform occupants thrown from the basket by boom whiplash after an impact or sudden stop

Testing, standards & frequency

Load / performance test

Typically a rated-load test is performed, often at 100%-125% of rated platform capacity depending on the standard and client, at the outreach positions the manufacturer's working envelope allows. Overload sensing, envelope limiting and emergency lowering are verified under load.

Inspection interval

Typically at least annually, with a pre-start check each shift, additional frequent inspections at manufacturer-defined intervals, and re-inspection after major repair or relocation where client rules require.

Standards referenced

  • ANSI/SAIA A92.20 (design, calculations, safety requirements and test methods for MEWPs)
  • ANSI/SAIA A92.22 (safe use of MEWPs)
  • EN 280 (mobile elevating work platforms - design calculations, stability, safety, examinations and tests)
  • Manufacturer specifications and load charts

FAQs

Does certification cover a telescopic boom lift's full height and reach?+

Certification covers the machine within its own manufacturer-rated working envelope, whatever the model's height or outreach. The inspector verifies that the limiting system keeps the platform inside that envelope rather than certifying any figure beyond the nameplate.

Can a telescopic boom lift be used in high wind in Saudi Arabia?+

Each machine has a manufacturer-set maximum wind speed or equivalent rating shown on the platform, and it should not be used beyond it. Shamal winds and dust events can be strong enough to exceed that limit, so site rules usually stop work at height when wind approaches it.
