Gantry Crane Inspection & Certification in Saudi Arabia

Gantry cranes run on rails or wheels at ground level, supporting a bridge girder on legs, and are used in precast and fabrication yards, pipe yards, ports and heavy workshops across Saudi Arabia. Because they operate outdoors, wind, sand and temperature swings add loads and wear that indoor overhead cranes avoid. Inspection must also cover the leg connections, rails and anchoring systems that keep the crane stable.

What we inspect on a gantry crane

  • ✓Leg-to-girder connections, bolts, welds and leg bracing for cracks and corrosion
  • ✓Ground rails, rail fixings, rail joints and end stops or buffers along the full travel
  • ✓Rail clamps and wind or storm anchors, and the wind speed sensor and alarm where fitted
  • ✓Travel drives, wheels, bogies, skew control systems and brakes on each leg
  • ✓Trolley, hoist, rope or chain, hooks and latches, including hoist brake performance
  • ✓Cable reel or festoon system, power supply and earthing along the rail track
  • ✓Hoist upper and lower limits, gantry end-of-travel limit switches, anti-collision devices where several cranes share a track, and the overload limiter
  • ✓For portable gantries: height adjusting pins, castors with locks, beam joints and rated capacity labelling

Common defects we find

  • ✓Skewing from drive imbalance or worn wheels, damaging rails and structure
  • ✓Rail clamps or storm anchors not engaging or seized from corrosion and sand
  • ✓Cracks or loose bolts at leg-to-girder connections
  • ✓Cable reel or festoon damage from abrasion along the ground track
  • ✓Portable gantry pins, castors or joints worn, bent or missing locking devices

Risks of operating uncertified

  • ✓Gantry sliding or tipping in high wind when clamps or anchors fail to hold
  • ✓Structural failure at the leg connections under repeated heavy loads
  • ✓Dropped load from hoist brake or rope failure over yards where people work

Testing, standards & frequency

Load / performance test

A load test is typically carried out at 100%-125% of rated capacity, depending on the standard and client, covering hoist, trolley and gantry travel, brake tests and girder deflection. Outdoor units are tested within the manufacturer's wind limit, with rail clamps and storm anchors proven to engage.

Inspection interval

Typically at least annually, with frequent operator checks, and before the windy season for outdoor rail-mounted units where client or site rules require.

Standards referenced

  • ASME B30.2 Overhead and Gantry Cranes
  • OSHA 29 CFR 1910.179 Overhead and gantry cranes
  • ISO 4309 Cranes - Wire ropes - Care and maintenance, inspection and discard
  • Manufacturer specifications and load charts

FAQs

What are rail clamps and storm anchors on a gantry crane?+

They hold an outdoor rail-mounted gantry in place against wind. Inspectors check that they engage, look for wear and corrosion, and verify wind speed alarms where these are fitted.

Can a portable gantry crane be load tested like a fixed one?+

Yes. Portable gantries are typically load tested to their stated capacity, commonly at 100%-125%, with checks on frame joints, height adjustment pins, locking castors and the trolley and hoist.
