Reach Truck Inspection & Certification in Saudi Arabia
A reach truck is a battery-powered, narrow-aisle truck whose mast or carriage moves forward on a scissor or pantograph mechanism to place pallets into racking. Reach trucks work at significant heights in distribution centres and port-side warehouses, where a fault can bring down a pallet or a rack bay. Inspection focuses on the reach mechanism, mast guidance and height controls, because failures there are rarely visible during normal operation.
What we inspect on a reach truck
- ✓Reach mechanism, pantograph arms, pivot pins and carriage rollers checked for wear, play and cracks
- ✓Multi-stage mast channels, rollers and lift chains inspected, with free-lift operation and chain tension checked
- ✓Front load wheels and straddle legs inspected for damage, flat spots and secure fixings
- ✓Height selector, lift cut-outs and any camera or height indicator tested, including the reduced-speed function at height
- ✓Velocity fuse or flow control valve in the lift circuit checked, so that a hose failure does not cause a free fall of the forks
- ✓Drive unit and steering mechanism checked for smooth operation and wear, as well as the electromagnetic brake
- ✓Operator presence pedal or switches, emergency stop and operator compartment guarding tested
- ✓Battery, charger leads and the capacity plate showing the capacity at different lift heights checked
Common defects we find
- ✓Worn reach rollers or loose pantograph pivot pins causing carriage play
- ✓Lift chains with uneven tension or seized links
- ✓Lift cut-out or height-related speed limiting not functioning
- ✓Flat-spotted or damaged polyurethane load wheels
- ✓Faulty presence pedal or brake that allows unexpected movement
Risks of operating uncertified
- ✓Pallet or load falling from high racking when the mast or reach mechanism fails
- ✓Lateral instability at height if the truck is driven or turned with the mast elevated
- ✓Impact damage to racking triggering partial rack collapse
Testing, standards & frequency
Load / performance test
A load test with certified weights is typically performed at 100% of the rated capacity for the lift height being tested, and up to 125% in some procedures, with the reach mechanism both extended and retracted. The test checks mast drift, hydraulic holding, braking, and the function of height-related cut-outs.
Inspection interval
Typically at least annually, and more often for multi-shift warehouse use or where client, insurer or site rules require.

FAQs
Why does a reach truck have a different rated capacity at different heights?+
As the mast rises and the carriage extends, the stability margin falls, so the manufacturer publishes a capacity that decreases with height. The data plate or chart should be checked against the actual racking heights in use.
Does a reach truck inspection include the racking?+
No. The truck inspection covers the vehicle itself, but racking is a separate structure with its own inspection requirements. Many warehouse clients arrange racking inspections alongside the truck inspections.
