Mini Spider Crane Inspection & Certification in Saudi Arabia
Mini spider cranes are compact tracked cranes with folding outrigger legs, used for glazing, facade panels, plant room equipment and installation in confined areas inside malls, towers and industrial buildings. They often work from slabs and finished floors, which makes outrigger loading and capacity limits critical on Saudi giga-projects and commercial fit-out. Independent inspection verifies the structure, outrigger geometry and electronic limiters that keep these small machines within their rated capacity.
What we inspect on a mini spider crane
- ✓Outrigger legs, pivot pins, folding and extension mechanism, and the cylinders and holding valves that keep each leg in position
- ✓LMI that senses each outrigger position, so displayed capacity matches the leg configuration
- ✓Telescopic boom and fly jib: wear pads, pin locking and attachments such as glass vacuum lifters
- ✓Rubber or steel track condition, undercarriage rollers and track width adjustment
- ✓Radio remote control: range, emergency stop, signal loss shutdown and battery condition
- ✓Hoist winch and rope for broken wires, termination condition and hook latch
- ✓Engine, battery or electric supply, and exhaust or ventilation arrangements for indoor use
- ✓Floor loading check at outrigger pads and use of spreader mats on slabs or finished floors
Common defects we find
- ✓Outrigger leg sensor or position detection giving false readings, leading to an incorrect capacity display
- ✓Remote control with weak signal, damaged emergency stop or poor battery
- ✓Cylinder drift on outrigger legs letting the crane settle during a lift
- ✓Hose or fitting damage in the cramped hydraulic layout around the boom base
- ✓Pad or foot damage causing floor point loads to exceed the slab capacity
Risks of operating uncertified
- ✓Overturning when an outrigger is not set to the configuration assumed in the LMI
- ✓Floor or slab damage and collapse from concentrated outrigger pad loads
- ✓Uncontrolled movement from remote control signal loss or a defective emergency stop
Testing, standards & frequency
Load / performance test
A rated-capacity load test is typically carried out at 100%-125% of rated capacity in representative outrigger configurations, depending on the standard and client, with the LMI display verified for each leg position used.
Inspection interval
Typically at least annually, with a pre-use check before each new site, particularly for indoor work where the floor loading must be reviewed.

FAQs
Can a mini spider crane be load tested indoors?+
Often yes, provided the floor loading is checked and test weights can be brought in. If the slab cannot take the outrigger pad loads, spreader mats are used or the test is done outdoors.
Does a mini spider crane have to be tested for each outrigger position?+
The LMI should recognise each outrigger configuration, and inspectors verify that the displayed capacity changes correctly. A physical lift is normally done in representative configurations rather than every possible setting.
