Soil Compactor Inspection & Certification in Saudi Arabia
A soil compactor is a heavy single-drum machine, usually with a pad-foot or smooth vibrating drum, used to compact subgrade, embankment fill and engineered fill on highway, rail, airport and industrial-city earthworks in Saudi Arabia. Working on loose fill close to the crest of an embankment puts unusual stress on the drum shell, rear axle and articulation joint. Third-party inspection verifies that the machine is mechanically sound and that its operator protection works before it is committed to high-risk fill areas.
What we inspect on a soil compactor
- ✓Pad-foot or smooth drum shell for cracks, missing or worn pads, and weld integrity at the pad bases
- ✓Drum drive motor, planetary gearbox and eccentric exciter for oil leakage, noise and abnormal temperature
- ✓Rear axle, differential and wheel hubs, tyre condition and wheel nut torque, including differential lock operation
- ✓Articulation pivot pins, bushes, steering cylinders and the lock bar used during transport and maintenance
- ✓Service, secondary and spring-applied parking brake performance on a slope
- ✓ROPS and FOPS structure, seat belt, steps and handrails
- ✓Operator field of view, mirrors, camera and reverse alarm, since the front drum creates a large blind area
- ✓Compaction meter, temperature gauge and vibration on-off switch function, where fitted
Common defects we find
- ✓Worn, bent or missing pads and cracked pad bases that reduce compaction efficiency and shed weld metal
- ✓Leaking drum drive motors or planetary gearbox seals
- ✓Worn articulation bushes and loose steering joint bolts
- ✓Differential lock or axle faults that reduce traction on loose fill
- ✓Parking brake that fails to hold, or an inoperative reverse alarm
Risks of operating uncertified
- ✓Overturn on side slopes, or collapse of loosely placed fill under the machine near the embankment crest, which is the most serious hazard for heavy soil compactors
- ✓Struck-by incidents involving ground workers in the blind area in front of the drum
- ✓Axle or articulation failure causing loss of steering control while working on a slope
Testing, standards & frequency
Load / performance test
Not applicable: a soil compactor is not a lifting appliance. The performance check is a functional test of drum drive and vibration, brake hold on a slope and steering operation. Achieved soil density is verified separately by geotechnical field testing, not by the equipment inspection.
Inspection interval
Typically at least annually and before mobilisation to a new project, with extra checks after heavy-duty use or repairs where site rules require.
Standards referenced

- ISO 5006 (operator's field of view for earth-moving machinery)

FAQs
What is the difference between inspecting a soil compactor and a vibratory road roller?+
Both are drum compaction machines, but a soil compactor usually has a pad-foot or heavy smooth drum and works on loose fill, so inspectors give extra attention to pads, drum shell welds and rear axle traction. A roller used on asphalt focuses more on the drum surface, spray system and smooth finish.
Does the inspection prove that the soil compactor achieves the required density?+
No. The inspection confirms that the machine delivers its rated drum mass, vibration settings and safe operation. Soil density is proven separately by field density testing on the compacted layer.
