Road Milling Machine Inspection & Certification in Saudi Arabia

A road milling machine uses a rotating cutter drum fitted with carbide picks to remove worn asphalt or concrete surfacing to a precise depth, ready for resurfacing or recycling on Saudi highways and city streets. The drum, belt drives and discharge conveyor operate in heavy dust beside live traffic and workers. Third-party inspection checks that the drum, lifting columns and guarding are safe before the machine goes onto a night-time lane closure.

What we inspect on a road milling machine

  • ✓Milling drum, tooth holders and carbide picks for wear, missing picks and holder damage
  • ✓Drum drive system, including belt tension and condition, clutch or hydraulic drive, and drive guarding
  • ✓Drum housing doors, scraper blades and side plates, and the cylinders that operate them
  • ✓Discharge conveyor frame, belt condition, slew and raise cylinders, and conveyor guarding
  • ✓Lifting columns, leg pivot pins, steering cylinders and track or wheel units
  • ✓Water spray system, including pump, filters, nozzles and tank, used for dust and pick cooling
  • ✓Operator platform, emergency stops, cameras or mirrors covering the drum and conveyor zones
  • ✓Engine bay cleanliness and fire extinguisher, since fine dust builds up near hot components

Common defects we find

  • ✓Worn or missing picks and damaged holders that unbalance the drum and cause vibration
  • ✓Cracked lifting column mountings or worn leg bushes that upset milling depth control
  • ✓Slipping or frayed drum drive belts
  • ✓Blocked spray nozzles and a damaged water pump leading to dust and overheated picks
  • ✓Missing conveyor guards or inoperative emergency stops

Risks of operating uncertified

  • ✓Entanglement or struck-by injury from the rotating drum and discharge conveyor, including ejected pick fragments
  • ✓Loss of stability if a lifting column or leg fails while milling near a lane edge or trench
  • ✓Fire in an engine bay or hydraulic area loaded with asphalt dust and hot oil

Testing, standards & frequency

Load / performance test

Not applicable: a milling machine is not a lifting appliance. A functional test is done instead, typically covering drum engagement and stop time, depth control through the lifting columns, conveyor operation, steering, brakes and the spray system.

Inspection interval

Typically at least annually and before mobilisation to a new contract, with additional checks after drum or lifting column repairs where site rules require.

Standards referenced

  • EN 500-1 (common safety requirements for mobile road construction machinery)
  • EN 500-2 (road milling machines)
  • Manufacturer specifications and load charts

Part of our Heavy Equipment Testing & Inspection service. You receive an inspection report, Certificate of Conformity and inspection tag for passing equipment.

FAQs

Do inspectors check the carbide picks on a milling machine?+

They check pick and holder condition, because missing picks and worn holders unbalance the drum and damage it. Routine pick replacement is a maintenance task driven by asphalt abrasiveness, not a fixed inspection interval.

Can a milling machine be inspected on an active roadworks site?+

Many checks can be done on site once the machine is parked in a safe, controlled area. Work on the drum, picks and engine bay requires the machine to be isolated and secured, which should be planned with the site supervisor.
