Snatch Block Inspection & Certification in Saudi Arabia
A snatch block is a single-sheave pulley block with a hinged side plate that opens so a rope can be fitted without threading the rope end, used to change the direction of a line or to multiply pulling force. Winch crews, crawler crane operators, heavy haulage recovery teams and pipeline construction crews in Saudi Arabia use them, often under severe duty. A block that redirects a rope through 180 degrees carries up to twice the line pull, so its rated capacity and sheave condition need to be verified independently.
What we inspect on a snatch block
- ✓Sheave groove for wear, corrugations and diameter against the rope size it is used with, since an oversize or worn groove damages the rope
- ✓Sheave bearing or bush for free rotation, play and lubrication
- ✓Cheek plates for cracks, bending and deformation, and the opening side plate and its latch or pin for proper closure and locking
- ✓Becket, swivel, hook or shackle fitting for wear, opening and cracks
- ✓Sheave rim for chips, cracks and sharp edges that could cut the rope
- ✓Rope guard and retaining pins for correct fit and condition
- ✓Markings for WLL, rope size range and manufacturer
- ✓Overall corrosion, weld repairs and signs of overload such as spread side plates or bent pins
Common defects we find
- ✓Sheave groove worn smaller or deeper, pinching or damaging the rope
- ✓Seized or rough bearing that stops the sheave rotating
- ✓Bent or cracked cheek plate, or an opened hook or shackle
- ✓Failed side plate latch or missing pin, allowing the rope to jump out
- ✓Illegible or missing WLL marking
Risks of operating uncertified
- ✓A redirected line can load the block at up to twice the line pull, so an undersized block can fail during normal winching.
- ✓A damaged sheave groove can cut or crush the rope, shortening its life and risking breakage.
- ✓A latch or side plate failure can let the rope jump the sheave and shock load the system.
Testing, standards & frequency
Load / performance test
Proof load testing of new, repaired or heavy-duty blocks is typically applied at up to twice the working load limit depending on the standard and client, with the sheave confirmed to turn freely and the side plates and hook re-checked afterwards.
Inspection interval
Typically at least annually, with a pre-use check of the sheave, latch and rope fit, and shorter intervals for recovery or heavy winching duty or where site rules require it.

FAQs
How do I choose the right snatch block for a winch line?+
Match the block's rated capacity to the greatest load it will see, remembering that redirecting the rope raises the load on the block above the line pull. Make sure the sheave groove and diameter suit the rope, and check the manufacturer's data for the minimum sheave-to-rope diameter ratio.
Does a snatch block need load testing?+
New or repaired blocks may be proof tested, and blocks in service are normally examined thoroughly at least annually. Whether a proof test is needed depends on the standard, the manufacturer and the client's requirements.
