⛓️ Slings, Rigging & Wire Rope

Round Sling Inspection & Certification in Saudi Arabia

A round sling is an endless loop of continuous load-bearing polyester yarn protected by a woven tubular cover, which gives a flexible, lightweight sling that conforms to the load and spreads bearing pressure. Saudi contractors use them for pipe, vessels, rotating equipment and finished surfaces where chain or wire rope would mark the load. The cover hides the core, so damage that matters may not show until it is serious, which is why an examiner who knows what to feel and look for adds real value.

What we inspect on a round sling

  • ✓Cover for cuts, abrasion, tears or holes that expose the core yarns
  • ✓Bulges, lumps or soft spots under the cover that suggest damaged or displaced core fibres
  • ✓Stiff, hardened or glazed sections that point to heat, chemical or friction damage
  • ✓Stitching on the cover seam and at the label attachment
  • ✓Label showing WLL, material, length, colour code and manufacturer, and whether it is still readable
  • ✓Cover wear at the bearing points where the sling contacts hooks and shackles
  • ✓Signs of UV exposure and fading, and whether the sling has been stored away from sun and sharp edges

Common defects we find

  • ✓Cover cut through, exposing the core fibres
  • ✓Hard, flattened or melted areas from heat, welding spatter or friction
  • ✓Chemical staining and stiffening after contact with acids, alkalis or solvents
  • ✓Lumpy or bulging core from internal damage or crushing
  • ✓Missing or illegible label

Risks of operating uncertified

  • ✓Hidden core damage can cause sudden rupture when the sling is loaded.
  • ✓Sharp edges can cut through the cover and core in a single lift if edge protection is not used.
  • ✓Using the wrong hitch type or a tight bend can overload the sling below the value shown on its label.

Testing, standards & frequency

Load / performance test

Not applicable: round slings are not normally load tested in service, because overload can damage the core yarns without any outward sign; acceptance relies on the manufacturer's certificate and a careful visual and tactile examination of the whole length.

Inspection interval

Typically a visual check before each use and a documented examination at least annually, with shorter intervals for heavy use, outdoor storage or where client rules require it.

Standards referenced

  • ASME B30.9 (Slings)
  • EN 1492-2 (Round slings)
  • Manufacturer specifications and load charts

FAQs

How can I tell if a round sling's core is damaged?+

Look and feel along the whole sling for lumps, flat spots, stiff areas or cover cuts. Any exposed core yarns, or a sling that has been overloaded or shock loaded, should be removed from service regardless of how the cover looks.

What is the difference between a round sling and a webbing sling?+

A round sling has an endless core of load-bearing yarn inside a protective cover, so the cover can wear without necessarily reducing strength. A webbing sling is a flat woven strap in which the webbing itself carries the load, so cuts and edge wear directly reduce its capacity.
