Lifeboat and Davit Inspection & Certification in Saudi Arabia

A lifeboat and davit combination is the launching appliance and survival craft carried on ships, offshore platforms and marine facilities for emergency abandonment or rescue. Saudi operators in the Arabian Gulf and Red Sea rely on these systems to be ready at all times, and failures during drills or maintenance have caused serious accidents globally. Independent inspection and load testing help confirm that falls, winches, hooks and brakes are in order and that the system matches the maker's and flag or class requirements.

What we inspect on a lifeboat and davit

  • ✓Davit arms, frames, pivot pins and structural welds checked for cracks, corrosion and deformation
  • ✓Falls (wire ropes) examined for broken wires, corrosion, kinking and end terminations, with sheaves and fall end fittings checked for wear
  • ✓Winch, brake and lowering control inspected, including centrifugal or manual brake condition and holding ability
  • ✓On-load and off-load release hooks inspected for wear, correct setting, release mechanism function and secure interlocks, as hook faults are a known cause of lifeboat incidents
  • ✓Limit switches, stowage and embarkation position checks, gripes or securing arrangements and emergency recovery arrangements confirmed
  • ✓Lifeboat hull, canopy, seats and harnesses, buoyancy and fittings examined for damage and condition
  • ✓Engine, fuel, batteries, starting system and propulsion tested for readiness
  • ✓Markings, instructions, certificates and launching and recovery documentation checked for currency and accuracy

Common defects we find

  • ✓Worn or incorrectly adjusted on-load release hook mechanisms
  • ✓Corroded or damaged fall wires and end terminations, including falls that are deteriorated where they run over sheaves or are past the renewal interval set by the maker and flag requirements
  • ✓Winch brake wear or misadjustment causing uncontrolled lowering speed
  • ✓Seized sheaves, davit pivots and limit switches from corrosion
  • ✓Lifeboat engine or battery failures that prevent starting when needed

Risks of operating uncertified

  • ✓Lifeboat released or dropped during launching, drills or recovery because of hook, fall or brake failure
  • ✓Crew injury during lowering because the winch brake or controls do not hold
  • ✓Survival craft unavailable in an emergency due to seized davit parts or an engine that fails to start

Testing, standards & frequency

Load / performance test

A dynamic test of the launching appliance and winch brake is typically carried out with the lifeboat loaded to a test mass of about 1.1 times the mass of the boat with its full complement of persons and equipment, depending on the standard and class. A static or overload test of the davit and release hooks at a higher proof load may also be specified, with results recorded in line with the maker's instructions and flag or class requirements.

Inspection interval

Typically at least annually for thorough examination and operational testing, with periodic dynamic load testing at multi-year intervals (often up to five years) as set by the applicable flag, class and manufacturer requirements.

Standards referenced

  • SOLAS Chapter III (life-saving appliances and arrangements)
  • LSA Code (International Life-Saving Appliance Code)
  • IMO MSC.402(96) (maintenance, thorough examination, operational testing, overhaul and repair of lifeboats, rescue boats, launching appliances and release gear)
  • Manufacturer specifications and load charts

FAQs

How often must a lifeboat and davit be inspected and load tested?+

Thorough examination and operational testing are typically annual, with a more demanding dynamic load test at longer intervals set by the applicable flag, class and manufacturer instructions. Check the vessel's planned maintenance system and regulations for the exact schedule.

Why are lifeboat release hooks inspected so closely?+

Release hooks carry the full weight of the lifeboat during launching and recovery, and incorrect settings or wear have caused boats to drop. Inspectors check hook condition, adjustment and interlocks as a priority item.
