Straddle Carrier Inspection & Certification in Saudi Arabia
A straddle carrier is a self-propelled container handler that drives over a container, grips it from above with a spreader and carries it inside its frame. They shuttle containers between quayside, stacks and rail or truck areas at container terminals and ports in Saudi Arabia. Tall frames, moving loads and constant manoeuvring near people make independent checks of the hoist, steering and braking systems important.
What we inspect on a straddle carrier
- ✓Spreader twist locks, flippers, locking indicators and telescoping drive checked for wear, damage and correct indication of locked and unlocked state
- ✓Hoist system inspected, including hoist wire ropes or lift chains, sheaves, drums and hydraulic hoist cylinders, for wear, leaks and correct tensioning
- ✓Frame, legs, cross members and spreader suspension examined for cracks, distortion and impact damage
- ✓Steering system tested for all-wheel steering modes, steering cylinders and sensors, with hydraulic hoses checked for chafing and leaks
- ✓Service brakes, parking brakes and wheel drive tested for effectiveness, with tyres and wheel fixings inspected
- ✓Engine, hydraulic power pack, cooling and exhaust systems checked for leaks, overheating and secure mounting
- ✓Overheight, container presence, anti-collision and load weighing or overload sensors, where fitted, functionally tested
- ✓Operator cab visibility aids such as cameras and mirrors, alarms, beacons, emergency stops and fire extinguishers confirmed working
Common defects we find
- ✓Leaking spreader tilt, side-shift or lock cylinders and chafed hoses that cause drift or incomplete locking
- ✓Hydraulic hose leaks on steering and hoist circuits
- ✓Stretched lift chains or damaged hoist ropes causing uneven spreader height
- ✓Brake wear and poor parking brake holding on slopes
- ✓Disabled or faulty container presence and anti-collision sensors
Risks of operating uncertified
- ✓Container released from the spreader during travel because locking confirmation is unreliable
- ✓Pedestrians or vehicles struck because of poor visibility or brake and steering failure
- ✓Tip-over or frame damage when the carrier hits stacks or is driven with the container raised too high
Testing, standards & frequency
Load / performance test
A rated load test with a certified test container or test weights is typically carried out at 100% to 125% of rated capacity depending on the standard and client. The test covers lifting and lowering, spreader holding, travel and steering with load, and braking performance.
Inspection interval
Typically at least annually, with pre-mobilisation checks and more frequent spreader, steering and brake inspections where terminal or client rules require.
Standards referenced
- ISO 3874 (series 1 freight containers, handling and securing)
- ISO 1161 (series 1 freight containers, corner and intermediate fittings)
- ASME B30.20 (below-the-hook lifting devices)
- Manufacturer specifications and load charts

FAQs
What is checked on a straddle carrier spreader during inspection?+
Inspectors check twist lock wear, flipper and guide condition, locking indicators and sensors, and the telescoping drive, because spreader failure is a leading cause of dropped containers. They confirm the lock confirmation signal works as designed.
Does a straddle carrier need a load test every year?+
Many terminals test a carrier on commissioning, after major hoist or spreader repairs and at a periodic interval, often yearly, set by their lifting procedure. The right interval depends on the manufacturer's instructions and client requirements.
