Hydraulic Jack Inspection & Certification in Saudi Arabia

A hydraulic jack turns hand pump or powered oil pressure into lifting force in a ram, and is used to raise, push and position heavy loads. In Saudi Arabia that includes lifting vehicles and trailers, bridge bearing replacement, equipment installation and machinery alignment during plant shutdowns. A leaking seal or a faulty relief valve can let the load come down or the jack kick out, so inspection checks the sealing, load holding, relief setting and the ram itself.

What we inspect on a hydraulic jack

  • ✓Ram and cylinder for scoring, pitting, corrosion on the chrome rod and straightness
  • ✓Seals and glands for leaks at the cylinder, pump body and release valve
  • ✓Relief or overload valve for correct setting and function, with no evidence of tampering
  • ✓Load holding at the rated load over a defined hold period, checking for creep or pressure drop
  • ✓Base, saddle and extension screw or lock nut for deformation, wear and secure fitting
  • ✓Hoses, couplings and gauge on remote pump systems for damage and gauge calibration
  • ✓Oil level, contamination and air in the system, indicated by a spongy action
  • ✓Marking of capacity, stroke and serial number, and the condition of the pump handle

Common defects we find

  • ✓Seals leaking so the jack drifts down under load
  • ✓Ram bent or scored, or cylinder body damaged
  • ✓Relief valve missing, out of setting or tampered with
  • ✓Saddle or base damaged, giving an unstable footprint
  • ✓Contaminated oil or air in the hydraulic circuit causing a spongy, unreliable action

Risks of operating uncertified

  • ✓Sudden descent or collapse of the load through a seal failure, crushing people beneath it
  • ✓Jack kicking out from an unstable base or off-centre load
  • ✓Cylinder over-pressurisation and burst from a tampered or wrongly set relief valve

Testing, standards & frequency

Load / performance test

A load and pressure test is typically held at 100%-125% of rated capacity depending on the standard and client, with the jack on a stable test bed and checked for pressure drop, leakage and creep over the hold period.

Inspection interval

Typically a thorough examination at least annually, with a check for leaks and damage before each use and more frequent re-inspection for jacks used in heavy shutdown or workshop duty where client or site rules require.

Standards referenced

  • ASME B30.1 (Jacks, Industrial Rollers, Air Casters, and Hydraulic Gantries)
  • OSHA 29 CFR 1926
  • Manufacturer specifications and load charts
  • Saudi Aramco General Instructions (GI), where applicable

FAQs

Can a hydraulic jack alone be relied on to support a load while people work underneath?+

No. A jack is a lifting device, not a supporting device. The load should be supported by stands, cribbing or mechanical locks before anyone goes beneath it.

Why does a hydraulic jack slowly creep down under load?+

Usually a worn piston seal, a release valve that is not seating properly, or dirt holding a check valve open. The jack should be withdrawn, repaired and given a fresh load hold test before it is used again.
