Plate Lifting Clamp Inspection & Certification in Saudi Arabia

Plate lifting clamps grip steel plates and sections with a cam or screw jaw so that the weight of the load increases the grip. Vertical clamps lift plates held upright, turning clamps rotate a plate from flat to upright, and horizontal clamps are used in pairs or sets to carry plates flat. They are used constantly in Saudi fabrication yards, shipyards and steel service centres, and the cam teeth wear slowly and invisibly, so a periodic examination and grip test is the only reliable way to know the clamp will hold.

What we inspect on a plate lifting clamp

  • ✓Cam and jaw serrations for wear, rounding and contamination with oil, paint or mill scale
  • ✓Jaw opening measured against the manufacturer's tolerance to detect body spread
  • ✓Cam pivot pin and retaining bolts for wear, bending and secure fitting
  • ✓Cam spring tension and the locking or safety latch holding the clamp open or closed
  • ✓Shackle, lifting eye or ring for cracks, wear and deformation
  • ✓Body for cracks, distortion and corrosion, particularly around the jaw throat
  • ✓Marking of working load limit, plate thickness range, material hardness limit and serial number
  • ✓Grip test on a plate within the rated thickness range, with no slip under load

Common defects we find

  • ✓Teeth worn or rounded so the clamp slips on the plate surface
  • ✓Cam spring weak or broken, so the cam does not bite until loaded
  • ✓Jaw opening beyond tolerance because the body has spread
  • ✓Pivot pin worn or bent, giving cam misalignment
  • ✓Rating marks removed or painted over

Risks of operating uncertified

  • ✓Plate slipping out of the jaws and falling onto people or equipment below
  • ✓Clamp used outside its thickness range or on hardened or coated plate, reducing grip
  • ✓Using a vertical clamp to lift horizontally, which loads the jaw in a way it was not designed for

Testing, standards & frequency

Load / performance test

A proof load test is typically carried out at 100%-125% of rated capacity depending on the standard and client, using a test plate within the rated thickness range, and the grip is checked for slip and jaw marking.

Inspection interval

Typically a thorough examination at least annually, with a check of the teeth, cam and latch before each shift and more frequent re-inspection in heavy fabrication use where client or site rules require.

Standards referenced

  • ASME B30.20 (Below-the-Hook Lifting Devices)
  • EN 13155 (Non-fixed load lifting attachments)
  • Manufacturer specifications and load charts
  • Saudi Aramco General Instructions (GI), where applicable

FAQs

Can plate clamps be used on galvanised, painted or hardened plate?+

Only if the manufacturer's rating allows it. Clamps have a maximum material hardness, and coatings or scale reduce the grip, so check the clamp marking and the manufacturer's instructions before lifting such plates.

Is there a minimum load for a plate lifting clamp?+

Yes, many manufacturers specify a minimum load, because the cam relies on the weight of the plate to tighten its grip. A plate that is too light can leave the clamp under-gripping, so check the clamp marking and manual before use.
