Wire Rope Sling Inspection & Certification in NEOM
A wire rope sling is a length of steel wire rope with an eye or fitting at each end, used as a single leg, a multi-leg bridle, in a basket hitch or as an endless grommet to lift fabricated steel, pipe spools, precast elements and plant items. In Saudi Arabia they are in daily use on mega-project sites, plant shutdowns and fabrication yards, where heat, abrasion and sand ingress wear them faster than in milder climates. Independent examination matters because a sling can look serviceable while broken wires and crushed sections inside the rope or under a ferrule have reduced its capacity well below the tag rating. The giga-project in north-west Saudi Arabia, mobilising vast fleets of heavy equipment and workers.
Wire Rope Sling inspection in NEOM: local context
Structural steel, prefabricated components and heavy plant arrive at NEOM in volume, and each piece is slung, shackled and set by rigging crews whose gear is exposed to strong UV, heat and salt air. UV and heat degrade webbing, wire rope corrodes and hardware wears, so EES inspects slings, shackles, hooks and spreader beams on site, tags what passes and recommends withdrawing what does not.
Wire Rope Sling inspection scope in NEOM
- ✓Broken wires counted per rope lay and per strand, including valley breaks, and compared with the discard table of the applicable standard
- ✓Ferrules or swaged sleeves for cracking, bulging, slippage marks and wire ends protruding at the entry
- ✓Thimbles in the eyes for seating, distortion and a rope that has pulled away from the thimble
- ✓Kinks, bird-caging, core protrusion, flattened or crushed sections and local reduction in rope diameter
- ✓Corrosion and pitting on the outer wires, heat damage, weld spatter and electric arc strike marks
- ✓End fittings such as hooks, master links and shackles for wear, throat opening and deformation
- ✓Identification tag or stamped marking showing WLL, rope diameter, length and unique ID, matched to the certificate
- ✓Rated capacity for each hitch type and leg angle compared with the tag and the manufacturer's data
Defects commonly found
- ✓Broken wires clustered near ferrules and in the choke or bearing zones of the rope
- ✓Kinked or crushed rope from being pulled out from under a load or dragged over sharp edges

Testing
Proof load testing is commonly carried out on new, repaired or suspect slings, typically at up to twice the working load limit depending on the standard, sling construction and client requirement, followed by a visual re-examination for permanent set or damage.
Frequency
Typically a documented examination at least annually, with a visual check by the user before each use, and shorter periods of around six months where service is severe or client rules require it.
