Dye Penetrant Testing (DPI / PT) in NEOM

Dye penetrant testing shows cracks, laps and porosity that break the surface by drawing coloured or fluorescent penetrant out of the defect with a developer. It works on any non-porous material, which makes it the common choice for stainless steel, aluminium and other non-magnetic welds, and a second method on carbon-steel welds. The giga-project in north-west Saudi Arabia, mobilising vast fleets of heavy equipment and workers.

Dye Penetrant Testing (DPI) in NEOM: local context

At a remote site like NEOM, proof load testing and NDT usually take place at temporary laydown areas and open construction fronts rather than permanent workshops, so access, heat, dust and salt air near the coast all shape timing. EES brings test equipment and NDT technicians to site, plans each test around lift and works programmes, and records results in clear, traceable reports.

What we deliver in NEOM

  • ✓Surface-breaking cracks, laps, porosity and lack of fusion open to the surface on welds and machined parts
  • ✓Stainless steel, aluminium, brass and other non-magnetic materials where magnetic particle testing cannot be used
  • ✓Weld root and cap checks and weld repair checks on pipework, vessels and structural joints
  • ✓Lifting accessories and fittings in non-magnetic material, and carbon-steel welds where the magnetic field cannot be applied or the procedure asks for a second method
  • ✓Visible (colour contrast) or fluorescent penetrant systems, with solvent-removable, water-washable or post-emulsifiable methods chosen to suit the surface and sensitivity needed
  • ✓Pre-cleaning, controlled dwell and developer times and surface-temperature checks, with consumables low in halogens and sulphur where the procedure requires them for stainless steel and nickel alloys
  • ✓Post-cleaning and re-test after repair, with a note of any surface condition that limits the test

Standards

  • ✓ASME BPVC Section V (liquid penetrant examination)
  • ✓ISO 3452 (penetrant testing)
  • ✓ASTM E165 and ASTM E1417 (liquid penetrant testing practices)
  • ✓Client procedures and acceptance criteria

Documentation

  • ✓PT report stating penetrant system, dwell and developer times and surface temperature
  • ✓Indication record with location, size and photographs
  • ✓Accept or reject result against the specified criteria
  • ✓Consumable batch and traceability record, with re-test report after repair

FAQs

Do you provide Dye Penetrant Testing (DPI) in NEOM?+

Yes. EES provides Dye Penetrant Testing (DPI) at client sites in NEOM, including The Line, Oxagon and Sindalah. Contact us with your requirement and we will confirm scope and scheduling.

Which standards and documents apply to Dye Penetrant Testing (DPI) in NEOM?+

Work in NEOM is aligned with the following standards and references: ASME BPVC Section V (liquid penetrant examination); ISO 3452 (penetrant testing); ASTM E165 and ASTM E1417 (liquid penetrant testing practices); Client procedures and acceptance criteria. On completion you receive: PT report stating penetrant system, dwell and developer times and surface temperature; Indication record with location, size and photographs; Accept or reject result against the specified criteria.

When should dye penetrant be used instead of magnetic particle testing?+

Use dye penetrant when the material is non-magnetic, such as stainless steel, aluminium or brass, or when a magnetic field cannot be applied to the part. On carbon-steel welds MPI is often faster, and some procedures ask for both methods.

Can dye penetrant testing find internal defects?+

No. It only shows defects that are open to the surface, so subsurface flaws such as internal lack of fusion or slag need ultrasonic testing. Penetrant also cannot be used on porous surfaces, which absorb the dye and hide the indications.
