Welding Machine Inspection & Certification in Saudi Arabia
Welding machines, including inverter and transformer-rectifier sets, MIG and TIG units and engine-driven welders, are used in fabrication yards, pipeline work and shutdowns across Saudi Arabia. Worn cables and poor earth returns create shock and fire hazards, while inaccurate ammeters and voltmeters mean the welder may not be running the parameters in the approved welding procedure. Third-party inspection checks electrical safety and the accuracy of the output readings that the weld quality records rely on.
What we inspect on a welding machine
- ✓Machine data plate: input supply, rated output current and duty cycle, insulation class and enclosure protection rating.
- ✓Primary supply: plug or isolator, input cable condition, and RCD or earth leakage protection on the supply.
- ✓Welding and return cables: insulation damage, cracked sheaths, crimped lugs and loose connections along the whole run.
- ✓Electrode holder or torch and the work return clamp: wear, burnt contacts and secure contact with the workpiece.
- ✓Earth continuity of the machine frame and insulation resistance between primary, secondary and frame.
- ✓Open-circuit voltage and the function of any voltage-reducing device on machines used in damp or confined spaces.
- ✓Output accuracy: current and voltage meters checked against a calibrated reference over the working range, against tolerances in the welding procedure or manufacturer data.
- ✓Gas shielded sets and oxy-fuel equipment: regulators, hoses, flashback arrestors and wire feeder drive rollers; engine-driven sets: exhaust, fuel and spark arrestor.
Common defects we find
- ✓Damaged cable insulation or exposed conductors near connections and lugs.
- ✓Loose or corroded work return clamp, leading to stray arcing through other equipment.
- ✓Ammeter or voltmeter reading out of tolerance against a calibrated reference.
- ✓Failed earth continuity or low insulation resistance on the machine frame.
- ✓Missing flashback arrestors or hose clips on gas equipment.
Risks of operating uncertified
- ✓Electric shock from damaged cables or a faulty earth, especially in hot, damp or confined conditions.
- ✓Fire or burns from arcing at damaged cables and poor return connections.
- ✓Defective welds on structural or pressure work when parameters differ from the approved welding procedure because of inaccurate meters.
Testing, standards & frequency
Load / performance test
Not applicable: a welding machine is not load tested like lifting equipment. A functional output verification is performed instead, measuring current and voltage across the working range with calibrated instruments, together with insulation resistance and earth continuity tests.
Inspection interval
Typically at least annually, with calibration verification at the interval set by the quality procedure or client, and a user check of cables and clamps before each shift.
Standards referenced
- IEC 60974-1 (arc welding equipment, welding power sources)
- ANSI/AWS Z49.1 (safety in welding, cutting and allied processes)
- ISO 17662 (welding, calibration, verification and validation of equipment used for welding)

FAQs
Why does a welding machine need calibration if it already produces an arc?+
The meters on the machine may read incorrectly, so the welder may not be using the amps and volts the qualified welding procedure requires. Verified output readings support the weld quality records on pressure and structural work.
What electrical tests are done on a welding machine inspection?+
Typically a visual check of cables and clamps, an earth continuity test and an insulation resistance test. The output current and voltage are also compared with a calibrated instrument.
